The Southern California Odyssey of the Mind Program stands at the forefront of creative problem-solving education, inspiring students to dream big, innovate, and collaborate. For the 2025-2026 season, we are thrilled to announce an important change in our competitive structure — a transition from Regional Tournaments to Qualifying Tournaments. This shift is designed to enhance team flexibility, streamline the competition process, and bring an exciting new energy to SoCal Odyssey.

Odyssey of the Mind is a renowned international program that challenges students from kindergarten through college to think creatively and work collaboratively. Teams tackle complex, open-ended problems and present innovative solutions through theatrical, technical, and artistic performances. SoCal Odyssey, as the regional branch, has a rich history of fostering ingenuity, teamwork, and lifelong learning among Southern California students.

Key Changes for 2025-2026

From Regional to Qualifying Tournaments

What’s New:

This year, SoCal Odyssey moves away from the traditional Regional Tournament format to embrace Qualifying Tournaments. This change means that teams are empowered to choose one of two qualifying events that best fit their schedules, removing the limitations that previously restricted teams to specific regional boundaries.

• Greater Flexibility: Teams can select the qualifying tournament that aligns with their availability, travel preferences, or school calendar.
• Enhanced Opportunity: The new model encourages broader participation and allows for better planning, making Odyssey of the Mind more accessible to students and coaches throughout Southern California.
• Streamlined Advancement: The qualifying tournaments provide a clear pathway to the State Finals, ensuring a fair and competitive process for all teams.

Qualifying Tournament Format

Two Qualifying Tournaments will be offered during the season, each structured to accommodate as many teams as possible with minimal overlap. Details regarding exact dates, locations, and registration will be announced shortly, but teams should plan for events in late February through March to maximize flexibility.

Teams may choose which tournament to attend, regardless of their home city or school district. This open system is intended to support team logistics and reduce scheduling conflicts.

Registration Process

Registration for the 2026 SoCal Odyssey of the Mind qualifying tournaments will open in late fall. Teams must register and select their preferred qualifying tournament by the stated deadline (to be determined and announced as soon all details are finalized).

Steps to Register:

• Visit the National Odyssey of the Mind website for access to the registration portal.
• Gather your team roster, including names of students, coaches, and parent volunteers.
• Select one of the two qualifying tournaments and indicate your choice during registration.
• Submit payment and register required volunteer judges by the deadline.

Team Preparation and Resources

Odyssey of the Mind is more than a competition; it is an experience that fosters creativity, resilience, and innovation. As teams prepare for the qualifying tournaments, they should utilize all available resources:

• Official Problem Synopses: Released annually, these documents outline the challenges for each division and guide teams in their creative process.
• Coaches’ Workshops: In Person Training sessions for new and returning coaches will be held throughout the fall. These workshops will cover rules, scoring, creative brainstorming, and best practices for team management.
• Ensure your team has their two required Volunteer Judges lined up. Judges must attend a virtual training as well as judge at one qualifying tournament and the state tournament if the team they represent is advancing.
• Teams must meet all eligibility requirements to advance.

Advancing to State Finals

Teams qualifying from either tournament will advance to the SoCal State Finals, which will follow the established Odyssey of the Mind format. The State Finals represent the culmination of months of hard work and creativity, offering an opportunity for teams to showcase their solutions on a larger stage and compete for a spot at the World Finals.

Advancement Criteria:

• Top-scoring teams that meet SoCal Odyssey of the Mind Advancement Guidelines from each Qualifying Tournament will earn invitations to the State Finals.  To qualify, teams must have a solution, present it in person and have two volunteer judges that have completed judges training.  The two volunteer judges must judge at the qualifying tournament and the state tournament if the team they represent are advancing.  Teams that do not meet advancement  guidelines may place, but not advance to the next level of competition.
• Judging will be based on creativity, teamwork, technical skill, and adherence to the problem requirements.
