To All Teams That Qualified To Attend State Assoc. Tournament:
As you know, the Covid-19 virus is having a dramatic impact across the globe and within our state. Many universities are moving classes online and sending their students home. School districts are limiting or canceling student travel. In order to protect the health and safety of all our OM participants, officials, and volunteers, I am sad to announce that the state board has voted to cancel this year’s SoCal OM state tournament.
The state board and state problem captains had a long and difficult discussion last night and did not come to the decision to cancel the state tournament lightly. Having been a coach for 10 years, I can completely understand how disappointed the teams and coaches will be. You all worked hard this season and we were excited to see your creative solutions at our tournament.
I truly appreciate the incredible sense of community and support that was demonstrated over the past few days as so many people stepped forward to be officials for our tournament. I want to thank each and every official who volunteered to assist at the state and regional tournaments. I hope that you will consider volunteering at a future Odyssey of the Mind event.
At this time, we are anticipating that world finals will take place. We need to investigate options for advancing teams from SoCal to world finals. I will be in close communication with the international program director and other state directors who have canceled state tournaments to devise a plan that works best for the OMers in SoCal. Please do not destroy any of your long- term solution materials until we have notified teams about how advancement will take place.
For those of you who ordered pins to trade at the state tournament, we will be sure to get them to you.
Coaches, please watch your email closely for information regarding how we will advance teams to World Finals. We will also post information on our website (www.socalodyssey.org) social media, so please like SoCal Odyssey on Facebook.
